Overseas Research Programs


  • Introduction

    For one semester (on a leave of absence from KAU), conduct research projects in your major field at UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) College of Engineering LAB. During the overseas period, take at least one major subject at the host University (expected education fee approximately USD 5,300)

    Eligibility
    - For 3rd and 4th year engineering students
    - 4th year students cannot apply during graduation semester. (However, students in a combined bachelor's/master's degree course at KAU can apply during their 4th year graduation semester)
    - Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher at KAU (4.5 point-scale)
    - Official English proficiency test score (valid within 2 years)

    - After completing the dispatch, submit the overseas research program evaluation form and weekly reports
    - Up to 7 credits recognized as overseas research practicum credits
    - Global communication competency certification available (individual application)

    - For 3rd and 4th year students in the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Engineering
    - 4th year students of graduation semester cannot apply (However, students in a combined bachelor's/master's degree course at KAU can apply during their 4th year graduation semester)
    - Application is not possible in cases of leave of absence, excess semester, completion of all semesters
    - KAU transcript (Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher)
    - Official English proficiency test score (valid within 2 years)

    Credit Recognition

    - Final selected program participants must register for the second semester of the relevant academic year and apply for the "Global New Materials Research Practice" course (Professor in charge: Prof. Do-gyun Kwon)
    - Credit Recognition: Earn 7 credits for "Global New Materials Research Practice" course
    - Must complete 6 weeks of on-campus prior training
    - Evaluation of the overseas research practice results within one week after the end of the program
    - Submit the overseas research program evaluation form and weekly reports within 2 weeks after the end of the program

  • Introduction

    The WEST (Work, English Study, and Travel) program is a program that connects language training and internship employment agreed upon at the Korea-US summit in August 2008 and is promoted as part of the global youth leader training project.

    Application and Selection

    - When to Apply: Recruitment twice a year (World Job Plus website www.worldjob.or.kr)
    - How to Apply: After applying for World Job online, submit the required documents to the KAU Office of International Affairs

    * The WEST program is selected by the National Institute for International Education. KAU only verifies submitted documents and recommends its own students.

    - Partial expense support for successful candidates (approximately 500,000 KRW)

    - Conduct research in selected Research Lines at the JAIST Institute in Japan (As of Summer 2026)

    3rd–4th year students or registered students on leave at KAU who meet the following GPA and English proficiency requirements
    - Minimum GPA of 3.0
    - Must possess a valid official English proficiency test score

    600 overall 5.0 or higher (minimum 5.5 in each band) 61 226 or higher (out of 600 points)

    ※ Students currently in an extended semester, having completed all coursework, or in their 8th semester as of the Spring 2026 semester are not eligible to apply
    ※ Students expected to graduate in August 2026 are not eligible to apply

    Evaluation Criteria

    Evaluation will be based on the research proposal (40%), academic performance (30%), and English proficiency (30%)

    Credit Recognition

    - Completion of mandatory pre-departure training is required
    - Within 2 weeks after program completion, students must submit the overseas research report and log to the Office of International Affairs for evaluation
    - Credit Recognition: Up to 5 credits can be awarded (1 credit per 30 hours of research practice)
